A piece of history was moved at Marina Park Friday morning to make way for portions of the waterfront development project.
The CN caboose that sat in front of the CN Station in the park was loaded onto a tractor-trailer by crane and then driven to its new home by the park’s Pearl Street entrance.
Waterfront construction supervisor Gary Wood said they looked at several sites in the park to move the train since most locations already had projects like the tai chi and skate parks designated to them.
"We just thought it was a nice draw at that end, to carry the historical theme of the railway from the caboose at Pearl Street, the CN station and the baggage building," said Wood.
The caboose had to be moved to make way for the water garden pavilion portion of the development plans, which Wood said will be under construction starting next summer.
The CN caboose was also in the way of the future lake infill work that will start in the near future.
Built in 1927, the caboose was purchased by the City of Thunder Bay in 1990 and restored in 2005 with the help of the railway pensioners.
