Letters to the Editor
Take another look
Sunday, October 18, 2009

With respect to your recent article regarding the proposed wind farm to be built in the southwest corner of the city, I well understand the feelings of frustration that often arise when citizens resist much needed change from time to time.  However, before you begin waving the NIMBY (not in my backyard) card at those poised to protest the above-noted project, inaccurately suggesting that the destruction of a "pristine view" is their only complaint, please go back and re-read Mr. Beaupre’s letter of October 12th.  I think you will find that it contains a lot more insight and intelligent reflection than you are willing to give credit for.

His letter also speaks to the undeniable damage to wildlife and rare foliage in the area, which can never be undone or replaced once destroyed.  He also points out the potential conflict between humans and animals as the result of the destruction of precious wildlife habitats . . . a conflict usually resulting in the demise of innocent animals, and something already experienced through irresponsible forestry practices in Ontario.  Of equal importance, however, are the unknown possible dangers to the health and well being of individuals residing in close proximity to these turbines.  For instance, what (if any) efforts have been made by Horizon, and other such developers, to ascertain the true physical impact of these initiatives on humankind? What do they really know of the impact they will have on us with respect to noise level and other related concerns referred to by Mr. Beaupre?

Finally, his letter raises a fair and reasonable question with respect to the way in which Horizon Wind Inc. is going about getting this development underway.  If, in fact, this particular green energy initiative is as good and sincere as they would have us believe, then why all the secrecy . . . the "in-camera meetings" with City Council and subsequent ineffectual public information sessions?  As in the case of certain other initiatives currently being undertaken by Thunder Bay’s civic leaders, I firmly believe that the reason for most "intensive human activity", as you put it, isn’t rooted so much in the selfishness of others, but more often in potentially good ideas being carelessly and/or incompetently implemented.
