Letters to the Editor
Better place for condos
Tuesday, October 13, 2009

So many letters have been submitted about marina development, I thought one more couldn‘t hurt, but from a slightly different perspective.

If I were in a financial position to contemplate living in a condo, anywhere, there would be several things about the proposed location at Marina Park that would turn me off completely.

I can‘t see the attraction of living within “spitting distance” of railway tracks. The smell of diesel fuel isn‘t high on my list of favourite odours; and trains constantly passing by – or even worse, sitting idling close by – wouldn‘t do a thing for me.

If I had the inclination to live in a condo, it would be in a much quieter location, with a much better view.

There‘s a big For Sale sign on Hillcrest High School. I‘ve had the privilege of viewing the sunrise from the roof of that building – anyone remotely interested in photography should have the chance to shoot the most spectacular sunrise over the Sleeping Giant. It simply cannot be duplicated! The building sits on (I believe) the highest point of land in the city.

As far as a building site, there‘s lots of room for both building and parking. Soil conditions are much more suitable than Marina Park, and services such as sewer and water are already in place.

A condo of any size would have an unparalleled view of our harbour. This would make more sense than butchering the marina.
